I first started Bikram Yoga in 1998 in Los Angeles, I was an ex-gymnast with a lot of back problems from wear and tear. by the age of 30 I had 2 blown discs protruding with bone on bone as the padding in between the discs had eroded. Every morning I felt like an old man, it would take me up to 20 minutes each morning to stand up right and I was suffering with a lot of pain, pain can be an amazing motivator. The doctors suggested back surgery but gave no guarantee it would make it any better, in fact they were suggesting to infuse which would give me no flexibility at all.
A friend of mine dragged me to a Bikram class in 1998 to a small hot studio in the valley of Los Angeles. I came out thinking, that was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. The next morning I rolled out of bed a stood up right, no pain, no stiffness, I stood in shock, this was the first time in 4 years I had a morning pain free. I went back to Bikram yoga that day and day after that and the day after that. I did 10 days straight and felt stronger and more alive than ever before. I got my life back, you have no idea how that felt.
12 months later I moved to Australia with my wife, I looked up Bikram yoga studios in Sydney and found only one, in Harbord NSW which then moved to Brookvale. I knew I couldn’t live with out it so we moved 10 minutes away. After practicing there for 2 years I believed so strongly in the practice that I decided to become a Bikram teacher, so in September of 2003 I completed the 9 week intensive Bikram training in Los Angeles. I came back to Sydney and by May 2004 we were building our first studio in Bondi Junction. I new if this yoga could change my life it could change others and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible.
In 2010 we opened our second studio in Maroubra. We have since shared this yoga with over 50,000 people between both studios. The greatest gift is seeing someone walk in to our studio and being able to watch the change not just in their body but in their mind.
